“To keep AI out of her classroom, this high school English teacher went analog.” Ditching the laptops for paper and pencils. How important is this for young people in developing their writing voice? How do you nurture yours?

I used to write all of my rough drafts in notebooks I took with me to work, only to type them into my computer when I was at home.
That was all that had at the time…
I have discovered that my writing has improved becoming much clearer and more well thought out, with the use of the spelling tools on my phone.
Plus I can write anywhere from my bed and livingroom to the Doctors office, whenever inspiration tickles my fingertips.
I only use Google’s Gemini AI to create the images I use to illustrate my posts because I’m a better author than an artist.
I don’t use AI to write for pleasure. I do use it at work because I don’t speak the business language of today – and truth be told I don’t want to.
I feel handwriting is needed and necessary in school and outside of school. It’s very grounding and it literally expands and stretches the brains capacity energetically. I personally and intentionally journal every night for multiple reasons, but relating to this topic, it helps sit me sit down to be still for bit when my body just wants to move move move all the time. A lot of marvelous things can happen when we sit in stillness.
I always find that my thoughts and writing are different when I compose with pen and paper rather than the computer. I’ve never tried using AI. I hope I never do.
